Eluxonica 1 [2026]

Eluxonica 1, for Photonizer (- the sonic lance)

A sound and movement performance by Ray Lee

The Photonizer is a sonic lance. It reacts and responds to light and translates light into sound. To play the Photonizer the solo performer must create a choreography, a dance, a struggle with the live manipulation of light levels and the movement required to control the corresponding musical tones. The form of the instrument suggests a physical lance, its structure a kind of absurd sci-fi space weapon that the performer must battle with to generate coherence and composition. The performance is a structured improvisation. Because the Photonizer is light sensitive, the ambient conditions will always be different and so the performer must adapt and respond to the situation as it presents itself to them.

Designed and built by Ray Lee the Photonizer is a self-contained instrument that requires no external amplification. It uses a light to sound sensor and built in sound processing and amplification to transmit sound through its integral loudspeaker.
